The study of the Cys-loop receptor's role in neuroimmune interactions of glioblastoma multiforme
The project team investigates the role of Cys-loop receptors (nicotinic acetylcholine, glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors) in the formation and functioning of synaptic contacts between glioma tumour cells and neurons. Earlier in the literature, an increased expression of genes encoding ionotropic glutamate receptors, nicotinic acetylcholine, ionotropic and metabotropic gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors, as well as transporters and synthetase enzymes corresponding to the receptors of these neurotransmitters, was shown in glioma cells involved in the formation of synapses. There is also a fairly extensive body of works devoted to the role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in glioma cells. However, the specific role of representatives of the superfamily of Cys-loop receptors (nicotinic acetylcholine, glycine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors) in the synapses of neurons with tumour cells remains poorly understood, and the signalling cascades triggered by these receptors in tumour cells are unknown. Simultaneously, establishing the relationship of individual subtypes of cis-loop receptors with cellular structures and molecular signalling pathways in gliomas will lay the foundation for the creation of drugs and diagnostic tools for the effective treatment of some types of these diseases.
