Alexander Vassilevski is elected as the Chair of the European Section of the International Society on Toxinology

The International Society on Toxinology (IST) unites scientists and clinicians studying venoms, poisons, and toxins from all over the world. The society was founded in 1962. It organizes world and regional congresses, publishes the journal Toxicon, and sponsors the prestigious Redi Award.

The society consists of four sections: European, Pan-American, Asia-Pacific, and the Africa and Middle East Section. Last week, the results of the elections for the next rotation of the IST leadership were summed up. Results of the elections in the European Section: Alexander Vassilevski (IBCh RAS, Russia) — chair, Jordi Molgo (Université Paris-Saclay, France) — secretary, Steve Peigneur (KU Leuven, Belgium) — committee member, Maria Ikonomopoulou (Madrid Institute for Advanced Study, Spain) — committee member, Tim Lüddecke (Fraunhofer IME, Germany) — committee member, early career.

Our Institute is one of the world leaders in the research of venoms and toxins. These studies are carried out by the Department of Molecular Neurobiology, created by Academician Eugene Grishin, and the Department of Molecular Neuroimmune Signaling, organized by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Victor Tsetlin, as well as many other departments and laboratories of IBCh. Researches working at the Institute are traditionally keenly involved in the activities of IST, attending World Congresses (in 2022 in Abu Dhabi, and in 2024 in Singapore). Eugene Grishin was the Chair of the Asia-Pacific Section and organized, together with Academician Valentin Stonik, Director of the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a regional congress in Vladivostok in 2011.

An ECR Committee was recently set up under the premises of the Society. IST regularly supports young researchers with travel grants to attend congresses, and rewards distinguished participants with special prizes.
